This post is a little late, but I thought I'd pass along the reason for moving the boardwalk and my opinion of the result. I left the Park before the walk was complete, but while I was there and working the part of the walk near Grotto was completed. Katy Duffy, the West District Interpreter, sent the attached photo and this explanation: "As we all know, the old boardwalk between Grotto and Giant was quite dilapidated and desperately in need of repair. Replacement of this section of boardwalk had been requested by maintenance supervisors Jim Knoelke/Grant Gifford each year for the past several years. "When I asked the boardwalk crew leader why the new boardwalk was moved over six feet, he told me it was because of an active vent that was too close to the old boardwalk. The new boardwalk provides resource protection by avoiding the fumarole - please see the attached photo." In my opinion the view from the new walk, which is about 3 meters farther from the cone than the old one, is still a fine place to see a Grotto start. You can see into the holes in the back of the formation to see the rising water level, and the surge is still impressive. It is not nearly as bad as some of the earlier posts would suggest and still offers a great view of Grotto. Ralph Taylor -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
