little late, but I thought I'd pass along the reason for moving the boardwalk
and my opinion of the result. I left the Park before the walk was
complete, but while I was there and working the part of the walk near Grotto was
completed.<BR><BR>Katy Duffy, the West District Interpreter, sent the attached
photo and this explanation:<BR></FONT><BR><IMG alt="" hspace=0

Giant was quite dilapidated and desperately in need of repair. Replacement of
this section of boardwalk had been requested by maintenance supervisors Jim
Knoelke/Grant Gifford each year for the past several years.<BR><BR>"When I asked
the boardwalk crew leader why the new boardwalk was moved over six feet, he told
me it was because of an active vent that was too close to the old boardwalk. The
new boardwalk provides resource protection by avoiding the fumarole - please see
the attached photo."<BR></FONT><BR>In my opinion the view from the new walk,
which is about 3 meters farther from the cone than the old one, is still a fine
place to see a Grotto start. You can see into the holes in the back of the
formation to see the rising water level, and the surge is still
impressive. It is not nearly as bad as some of the earlier posts would
suggest and still offers a great view of Grotto.</FONT></FONT></P>
