33 degrees and sunny leaving West Yellowstone at 0700. A beautiful
morning given the weather prediction. Splatters of raindrops started
at the entrance to Firehole Lake Dr and light sprinkles continued once
I arrived at the UGB. No sunshine there! After Grand, Depression,
and Beehive, I took myself out of the cold, wet wind and came home to
make some soup and wash clothes. It was only 0930, but any day
with Grand, Beehive, and Depression is a good one. 38 degrees leaving
by the W entrance road with fat wet snow plops hitting the windshield.
The day, at least here in West, did improve somewhat as it
progressed. 56 degrees at 1915 and clearer skies, but I'm still
hugging the heater.
Jim Scheirer saw Fountain 0506ie
Tardy was active as I came and went Grand to Beehive and back.
Neither of us saw Sawmill up to that time.
Plume 0523, 0811
Depression 0751
Grand 0835 T2C
W Triplet 0805 Rift 0847
Oblong 0631
Daisy 0709, 0923
Grotto Fountain 0800, Grotto 0801
Penta 0536ie
Beehive 0900 The radio call for the indicator was weak--sounded like
0851ie. I made it just to Depression from Grand by the time the
eruption started. In the freezing rain, 3 youngsters ran into the
spray and stood there in the icy wind. Their parents comment: "no
valedictorians there". They all headed back toward the cabins when
the eruption ended. No other visitors made it further than the
overlook.
Little Squirt was ie 0735
Till was ie 0937 as I was leaving the basin.
A photographer at Grand was just thrilled with the cold and steamy
eruption. That's Grand, even when it's not in the best circumstances!
Jeff Whittaker (spelling is mine), a young man from Sandy UT who has
been coming to the park all his life with his family, is working in
the OF area. Look for him this summer.
No word on the F&M marker up to the time I left.
