According to Lee Whittlesey--

Mary Bay--"Mary Bay was named in 1871 by Hayden survey artist Henry Wood Elliot for his girlfriend Mary Force, a lady about whom virtually nothing is known. A.C. Peale, another survey member, wrote in his diary that year: "The bay just before us in Mary's Bay, so named by Elliot after some lady to whom he has promised to introduce me next winter."'

Mary Mountain--"Mary Mountain appears to have been named by tourists using this road (from nearby Mary Lake), and the name was in use by 1890."

Mary Lake--

"This lake was named in 1873 by the Rev. Edwin J. Stanley, a preacher who made a trip through the park that year, and later wrote Rambles in Wonderland about his trip. Stanley wrote:
"We passed along the bank of a lovely little lakelet, sleeping in seclusion in the shade of towering evergreens, by which it is sheltered from the roaring tempests. It is near the divide, and on its pebbly shore some members of our party unfurled the Stars and Stripes, and christened it Mary's Lake, in honor of Miss Clark, a young lady belonging to our party."
Stanley also noted that Miss Clark was "a young lady from Chicago, with vocal gifts that all admired." Indeed, W.H. Todd, who accompanied the party, later remembered "Miss Clark of Chicago who sang so beautifully."
Todd recalled how he had rushed to her rescue at one point on the trip when she was knocked from her horse by a low-hanging branch into a swampy place. She was unhurt but the entire party made a great fuss over the incident."
