According to Lee Whittlesey's book Yellowstone Place names, they were both personable young ladies <g>. Mary Bay was named after the girlfriend of an artist on the 1871 Hayden expedition, and Mary Lake (and presumably Mary Mountain, since they're close to each other -- Mary Mountain doesn't have an entry in the book) was a "young lady from Chicago" in the party of Edwin J. Stanley's trip through the park in 1873. Meg who is a Mary Margaret http://mmjustus.com OK, so YNP has Mary Bay and Mary Mountain. Who is Mary? Interesting article, btw.
