According to Lee Whittlesey's book Yellowstone Place names, they were both personable young ladies <g>. Mary Bay was named after the girlfriend of an artist on the 1871 Hayden expedition, and Mary Lake (and presumably Mary Mountain, since they're close to each other -- Mary Mountain doesn't have an entry in the book) was a "young lady from Chicago" in the party of Edwin J. Stanley's trip through the park in 1873.

OK, so YNP has Mary Bay and Mary Mountain. Who is Mary?
Interesting article, btw.
Thanks,
