My tale about Daisy Marie -- Marie Wolf - is short. She was called "Daisy Marie" for good reason, and this is how I met her in the first place. Back in the early 1970s, when Daisy and Splendid were undergoing occasional, short active phases separated sometimes by days of dormancy, I was working Park Service maintenance at Canyon. Marie was the switchboard operator in the Old Faithful Inn. (That switchboard, located adjacent to the east corridor behind the registration desk, was the old sort, where the operator pulled cords that plugged into the appropriate connector to complete a call.) If she was on duty, Marie was at the switchboard; if she was off duty, she was at Daisy. On my days off, my usual procedure on arriving at Old Faithful was to go into the Inn to check with Marie, who usually was on duty. Had Daisy and/or Splendid been active in the last few days? If so, when? And so on. She was free with the information, as was I in exchange. It was, however, always a thrill to hear that Daisy had not been active, to go out there, and to be the only person present for the first eruption of a new series. As a by-the-way, in later years Marie held other jobs at Old Faithful. One of them was in the kitchen area, where she seemed to be the only person who could keep the dishwasher working. It was known as "Daisy." Scott Bryan -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: </geyser-list/attachments/20100112/80e215ea/attachment.html>
