Why does an earthquake show up on Seismographs on anothe continent? Ans:
The earth is like a large balloon filled with fluid. If you poke the
balloon with your finget anywhere on the surface, the wave motion is transmitted
throughout the container "The balloon" in all directions. Seismographs setup
anywhere on the surface of the balloon will detect the distortion waves as
they travel through the fluid. The crust of the earth would be likened unto
the rubber of the balloon, and motion waves travel around the balloon
surface through the rubber, and other wave motion travels the more direct path
through the fluid inside the balloon. Thus Seismographs all over the world
can be used to "Trianglulate" and find the exact location of the "poke on the
balloon" by the type of wave and the time of arrival at several Seismographs
around the surface of the balloon "Earth".
The colors on the charts are to separate quarter hour time increments
from each other so you can track large shakings as they happen. The charts
are continuous, but the color changes every 15 minutes.
Hope this helps......... Gary Henderson</HTML>
