Wednesday, September 3, 2014 Steamboat had a major eruption at approximately 2300 on Wednesday, September 3. A couple of the Norris rangers arrived at the Steamboat platform about 2315 near the end of the water phase. Several gazers headed up to Norris as soon as word went out about the eruption. Big thanks goes out to Micah for the radio call about the eruption, which alerted the gazers staying in the Old Faithful area. I arrived at the Steamboat platform at 0035 on September 4, approximately 95 minutes after the start of the eruption. The roar could easily be heard from the parking lot and throughout the basin. The steam cloud was immense, towering over the area, and the power with which the steam was being ejected was incredible. The bridge at the bottom of the major runoff channel was coated with debris as was the trail just beyond the bridge heading toward Echinus. This was my first Steamboat eruption. I only get to spend two weeks a year in the park (and some years have to cancel my trip altogether for work), so I honestly never thought I would see a Steamboat eruption. This is easily the highlight of my trip.
