THIS POST IS FOR THE PERSONAL USE OF THE READERS OF THIS LISTSERV AND IS NOT TO BE REPRODUCED FOR ANY OTHER PURPOSE, INCLUDING PUBLICATION IN THE SPUT OR TRANSACTIONS Chinese Spring erupted overnight 5/31 - 6/1. The eruption threw out a lot of sticks and coins, plus a few other things such as bones, a film canister, etc. Erosion channels were carved by the eruption. I didn't hear about the eruption until after I got back to West Yellowstone last night. I checked it at 5:20 this morning. The water in Chinese Spring was still murky, but the water in East Chinese Spring was clear. Both springs were boiling vigorously. This morning I could still smell the dead fish smell of singed vegetation. There were no soap bubbles around the spring. I believe the last known activity of Chinese Spring was in 1988. All historically known activity have been eruptions that were induced in one manner or another. Serendipitously, I have an article about activity of Chinese Spring in the queue for Little Bit Columns for The Sput. Genean has agreed to move it to the June issue, pushing the White Dome article to the August issue. I took some pictures today (6/2). Steve Eide has pictures from 6/1. I'm hoping he will write up something for The Sput since he has additional information. I'll send out a geyser report for 6/2 later this evening. Lynn Stephens
