I'm not sure if it was Brad Barth or someone else that alerted the Visitor Center of the Black Diamond eruption last week, but first of all I'd like to thank them (even if they aren't on the list). The eruption of Black Diamond was at 1642 on 23 August. At 1651 the Visitor Center reported via FRS radio to gazers in the basin that the eruption had taken place. This, to me, is remarkable speed and I appreciate both the report and the naturalist staff at the VEC at the time who passed it on. My family was just at Biscuit Basin an hour before the eruption, so it is unfortunate that we didn't stay for about 10 more Jewel eruptions... We went back and were in the parking lot by 1700. We stayed until 1730. When we arrived, Salt and Pepper were playing about twice the height that I remembered them from our visit just 1-2 hours before. At that time they were maybe playing 2 feet in height and very white in color. When we returned they were playing 4-5 feet and were very muddy and throwing out small rocks. By 1730 they had cleared remarkably, though they were still playing to what seemed about 4 feet in height. We continued to look on Thursday and Friday if we drove by Biscuit to at least note the status of Salt and Pepper and it remained white the rest of our trip (we left Saturday morning).
