The web is full of wonderful tools, one of which I just discovered. This free website (link below) will calculate fuel usage for your vehicle as well as tell you where the best places to refuel are along your route. You plug in start and end addresses (one-way or round trip), add any interim destinations, vehicle data and options. I believe from personal experience that the output is an accurate set of suggestions. It can be optimized for maximum savings vs. fewer stops and starting fuel tank amount under the "advanced options". Since gas prices vary hourly it's probably best to use it just prior to leaving. Rather than feeding the oil companies you could donate the savings to your favorite charity.
