Tara saw King today, 7/20, at 1116. She and Scott Grisso arrived about
one hour prior to the eruption. At that time King was overflowing and
having periodic boiling. The boiling was on the near side of the pool
as seen from the boardwalk between Abyss and Black pools. The boiling
reached approximately 6 inches at its peak. Based on three hours worth
of observation on Saturday and one hour today, there was a slow
progression of the boiling becoming stronger and more frequent as the
eruption neared. Today during the hour prior to the eruption, the
boiling increased and ebbed about every three to five minutes, but never
stopped.
The eruption started with a boil that suddenly spiked to three feet.
And then, the entire pool began to dome with roiling surges. The height
was strongest in the first minute or so, reaching mostly 10-15 feet with
a couple bursts to 20 feet. It involved the whole pool in a wide Oblong
like action, except the activity was highly domed looking. The last few
minutes of the eruption the height waned to 5-8 feet. The duration was
six minutes.
After seeing today's eruption, Tara believes they may have missed an
eruption on Saturday by a couple hours.
Photo conditions were bad, too much smoke.
"Skinny" Geyser is also active.
