Giant Geyser erupted midday today, Mon., Oct. 22. I feel dumb because I missed it by minutes. My report is fragmentary. I called the Visitors' Center this morning, and they had had a report of Grotto i.e. last night at 2215, but no news yet this morning. I drove in and met Rebecca and two other guys at around 1150 at Castle. They said Grotto had turned on at 1113 for a few minutes. Giant had a modest hot period at 1130. Grand was expected around 1300, so I went on over and saw that Rift was erupting and Grand's pool very low. The jugwalk was very treacherous and slick with ice, so at 1210 I for some dumb reason decided to drive over and check out Black Diamond at Biscuit, which visitors had reported seeing a week ago Monday. At 1219 at Castle I looked down the valley and saw nothing unusual. Shortly before 1300 I turned around from Black Diamond and saw a large steam cloud in the Upper Basin from Biscuit and KNEW it must be Giant. By 1310 I was back at Castle and asked two persons returning from the bridge if they had seen Giant start. One said yes, at about 1215. I asked if he was sure, and the other said well that was about when Giant was going up to the top of its cone and actually the big eruption started at about 1220. Again, this is a visitor report, but if true, I missed the Giant start by ONE MINUTE!~ No other gazers were there as far as I know. I called Tara, who said Pat Snyder had seen it around 1232 on the webcam. Another day, another story. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
