GIANT May 19, 2007 @1209, interval exactly 5d 00h 00m, duration somewhat short @86 minutes. No doubt you all already know that Giant erupted today. Here are a few facts. The Grotto marathon that started between 1700 and 1800 (apparently) on Thursday continued throughout yesterday. Kendall Madsen checked it last night and found that it was still 2145ie but off before 2320. Assuming roughly 2230 off, that was a marathon duration of about 29 hours. Nice timing. So add 9 hours and you get 0730. We were there. Waiting. And waiting. The big event finally began at 1156, so a recovery period of about 13 1/2 hours. Bijou showed good water (as opposed to slight spitting) about 20 minutes before the hot period began. 1156 water rising in Mastiff, quite quickly. 1157 Feather on; Feather Satellite on only 24 seconds later; Mastiff overflowing heavily with surging 2 to 3 feet. approx 1204 after continuous surging, Mastiff flat but still overflowing strongly, then after not more than 30 seconds, surging again. This time the surging was several feet high and wide. 1206 Mastiff climbing 10 -- 20 -- 30 -- etc. feet. Although I barely saw it as I dashed for a hoped-for good photo spot, Mastiff reached at least 50 feet accompanied by a roaring Catfish. 1209 Giant. It was not a particularly good photo op day, given considerable cloud cover and lousy light. But OK. Three in a row for me. Attached is a photo that sort of shows Mastiff just as Giant was rising. Open question: is this sort of duration typical of a Mastiff function eruption? BEEHIVE is item #2. No eruption today, and the bubblers were active as before, really as if there was no eruption yesterday. However, per Karen Lowe, a long-time, experienced Xanterra employee reported seeing Beehive in eruption on the evening of either Tuesday 5/15 or Wednesday 5/16 (Karen wasn't sure which) at about 2000. I know some of you are archiving Webcam shots. Does anybody see Beehive at one of the suspect times? Till ie initial 0637 Depression 0652 Plate (!) 1350ie. Castle 1129 major Grand 0532E and 1347 (T1C). Oblong 1033 and 1358ns. Daisy really short today, with 0754, 1010, 1227 and 1441. Riverside 0707 and 1346.
