[Geysers] Morning activity May 13

FYI, there was a "confirmed" Morning eruption on the Saturday of opening
weekend. Or so we thought.

Kendall was videotaping Fountain when something absolutely huge erupted
behind it. He got it on video, downloaded it to a computer, and we all saw
it at the Lower Hams parking lot later. The bursts were actually
reminiscent of Morning, not the typical Morning's Thief mega-play, which is
more obelisk in nature. My initial impression was it was indeed something
from Morning (I've seen a bunch, 70's, 80s, and 90s). But something seemed
a bit peculiar. I asked him to slo-mo, frame by frame. I was looking at
some rocks that were in the picture on the front of Fountain - even sketched
them - so I could see exactly where he was standing and from where the
Morning eruption took place. Suzanne and I went out there. I found the
rocks, lined up everything. It was Morning's Thief that erupted.

Kendall came out there also. He confirmed where he was standing, and he
confirmed it was indeed Morning's Thief.

I surely hope that Morning did erupt on Sunday. This would be so cool! 80
feet - that's bigger than Daisy! There are hints that there has been some
activity recently, like a marker that Mike told me was in place in early
april - it was not there on opening weekend.

The one thing that concerns me about the report is that Morning didn't start
until well into Fountain's eruption - by my reckoning it must have been at
least 8-10 minutes. Morning doesn't do that (well, not YET.)

I hope photos can be placed somewhere of the eruption, especially those that
have some foreground/background objects so we can truly pin it down.

Fingers crossed for Morning!

I just talked to Brad Barth, a long-time and reliable tour guide, and it was
indeed he who made the report abouot Morning... errr, this morning. He is
one of the fulltime drivers of the big yellow Buffalo Bus rigs -- you've
probably all seen him, even if you didn't know it. He said:

Fountain was in eruption as they entered Fountain Flat. He tried to hurry
his group up to the mud pots and beyond in order to see some of Fountain.
They were successful. While all the way out by Spasm is apparently when
Morning started. There was a series of bursts, mostly 25-30 feet high but
one that Brad feels hit at least 80 feet. These were definitely from the
pool of Morning and not Morning's Thief. One of his passengers got some
video of it, video apparently already seen by people in the OFVC.

Fountain had a total duration in excess of 40 minutes and at times was
tossing rocks, which Brad thought maybe were being washed over to Fountain
by Morning's action.

And I had not heard this before now: apparently Morning also had a
confirmed-by-photo eruption sometime in mid-winter.

Stay tuned.
