Robert:

There was zero suspicion at the time of the Sept 9 1978 eruption that it
took place - after all, Marie SAW it erupt from between lower Ham's and the
OFI. She called the VC to have them go look and see what the heck was going
on. Someone did, a bit later. The vegetation on the platform (yes, there
was some vegetation!) was cooked and pushed down. The smell was like rotted
fish, and there was wash and debris on the old "T" boardwalk.

There was also zero suspicion or evidence that it was an induced eruption.
In fact, in the week or so before the eruption (I left for the season on the
6th) Marie and I had noticed an absolutely remarkable change in the Daisy
group. Beginning with the small spouters in the trees to the west of
Splendid - oops, they're not there any more!! - the entire group began to
display a slight color shift to a reddish tinge, from west to east. First
the spouters, then the Splendid area and associated sputs along with Daisy's
thief, then Brilliant, then Daisy, then Radiator and Bonita, then Bank...
all of their discharge (or splashing, or pool color if they weren't
erupting) had a weird brick-red tinge. When I left, both Marie and I were
totally intrigued and she wanted to spend as much time down there as
possible (it was also a very good Splendid year.) The Giant eruption
occurred while she was at work in the Inn - she was walking down to the
Ham's store for a quart of milk and on the way back saw this big, weird,
slightly reddish-tinged eruption down basin. She told me via letters she
briefly wondered if it was Giant but really didn't know. When she got back
to her work (she was the "can lady" at the Inn) she called the VC. Butch
answered, to the best of my recollection. They called her back an hour or
so later...

She told me that the color of the water of the "mystery" eruption was pretty
much the exact same color we saw slowly make its way eastward in the Daisy
group over the past week or so. And it was aimed directly at... Giant. She
also said that the odd color cleared up quickly after Giant erupted.

So this should quell any question that it was induced, or whether or not it
took place.

How anyone at the time questioned it is beyond me. None of the gazers did,
and because it was the naturalists themselves who verified it, it's doubtful
they questioned it also. One wonders where such rumors come from.

But it's nice to have the opportunity to clear the record - not that many
(if any) of the gazers ever wondered if the '78 eruption took place or not.

    Paul,

At the time, there was some suspicion about the 1978 eruption, as I
understand.

But at the same time, again, as I understand, there was once a time
when many of the rarer fall events were considered suspicious, apparently
because that was right when all the seasonal employees were all about to go
home !! There can be some heavy employee partying that goes on right around

then..

One of the things I remember most about the 1982 Giant was the all
pervasive smell of cooked vegitation, as all of the plants that had grown up

in the area over the years were boiled to death.

   It smelled kind of like...seaweed.

Congrats on the 1982 Giant. However, the Giant eruption of Sept 9, 1978 was
the first non-induced eruption since 1955, and was seen in the distance by
Marie Wolf and several others.

    Gang,

I have just started watching the OF web cam while I do my computer work
here at our local community college.

Scott wrote : "GIANT last evening, May 1, at 1911."

So THAT was the big cloud of steam I saw back behind the trees to the
left

a little after 7:00 web-camera time last evening !!

I kind of thought it was Grand.....so it was cool to hear that it was
Giant.

Bob Johnson Bend Oregon. ( Obnoxiously proud to be the *ONLY* gazer
who saw the Sept 1982 Giant eruption, at that time thought to be the first
non-induced eruption in 19 years.)

I just looked at the webcam feed. They have zoomed in a bit and moved to the
right a bit. BAD!!!

Giant will not be visible. Old Faithful's eruptions will frequently be out
of the image on the top. No benches are visible.

Yes, it looks like somebody cleaned the lens - and thank you for that. But
please revert to the view we had. This serves no purpose. And people who
like calling back home to wave to the webcam will also be disappointed.

I just saw that the view from the webcam has changed again, and IMO for the
better. It's a bit more to the left than previous. It should be easy to
see Grand now (it used to be almost directly on the left side.) Dome is not
there, but I can live with that.
