I'm getting my first taste of Giant webcam watching. Not like being there, but a whole lot better than nothing at all!

Here are some details about today's eruption, thanks to Jeff Cross and Andrew Bunning:

The Grotto marathon that had been in progress all day on 9/21 ended around 2300. Early this morning Jeff found a quite different situation at Grotto than what was seen during the last marathon recovery. It was a lot more like the other marathon recoveries he had seen this year when Giant erupted--Emerald was active, and the GIP was slowly rising to a high level.

The hot period started at 0953 and Mastiff had heavy overflow and wide surging to as much as 3 feet in the first 4 minutes. Then it went flat for about a minute, was up and down for a couple of minutes, and then had some very heavy surging/bursting to 6-7 feet. Mastiff was overflowing copiously for the entire hot period and India was inundated. At around 9 minutes into the hot period Mastiff began to surge heavily and throw off its pool, and it went into eruption at 1003. It erupted for over 2 minutes to 30-40 feet, then stopped. Then, to the joy of those watching, the sun came out. Just as Giant was having heavy surging in its cone, Mastiff started to erupt again, and Giant started at 1006. Those there said it was beautifully backlit, but not exceptionally tall, estimated at 170-180 feet. Catfish also erupted, but the eruption was not as powerful as those seen earlier this year.

Congratulations to all who saw Giant, especially Jeff, who got a very nice birthday present!
