The Giant Information Relay Service brings you this special report:
Giant erupted today, October 27, at 1834. Here are the details as reported by Jeff Cross:
There was a very strong hot period at 0615 this morning. There was a Feather restart which included huge vertical surges in Giant to over the height of the cone, but Giant did not erupt. For the rest of the day, hot periods occurred every 50-90 minutes and lasted 1-3 minutes with very little energy expended. The Southwest Vents typically started before Feather and Mastiff put out very little discharge.
The eruption hot period progressed as follows:
1825ns Feather and the Southwest vents on
1825 Feather Satellite and Rust start
1829 Mastiff begins to overflow heavily
1831 Cave begins erupting to 3 feet
1834 Giant
The hot period started slowly, gradually building in strength. It was too steamy to see how high Mastiff was surging. When Giant started, it was tinted pink by the setting sun. Jeff reported that it was about 200 feet tall.
