Jeff Cross called me this morning to report that Giant erupted early this morning, October 4, at 0256. He did not give specific times but here is a summary of what he saw:

The first Grotto after the mini-marathon reported by Scott was in the early afternoon yesterday, Oct. 3. After that Grotto eruption, it did not erupt again all day. Starting in the mid-afternoon, South Grotto Fountain was splashing, and then having full eruptions. Towards evening Spa filled to overflowing and held there until sometime after Giant started.

At Giant, there were hot periods or bathtubs every 1-2 hours all afternoon and evening, with stronger hot periods coming about every 5 hours. Mastiff did not surge much during these hot peirods; stronger hot periods included Feather Satellite and more discharge from Mastiff. A little after 1500 there was a stronger hot period in which Mastiff surged to about 4 feet and Cave bubbled vigorously to several inches. There was a mid-size hot period around 2000, and after that all hot periods were weak until the eruption hot period.

It was so dark that Jeff did not see the start of Feather, so he did not catch the start time of the hot period. It was also too dark and steamy to tell much about the hot period; he said that based on sound Mastiff did not surge much, and he did not see Cave erupt. However, he was sure that Feather shut off and then started again, so this eruption was from a Feather restart. This is the second such eruption observed this year; the other was on July 13.
