My copy of the April issue of The Sput arrived today. Thank you to all the people who put together a 40 page edition.
A couple comments--
Scott's list of Giant eruptions sinc 1955. Thanks to Scott for keeping the list and making it available. Please note that he has 161 eruptions listed; #135 is used twice for the 4/02/02 again for the 4/14/02 eruptions. Some of us could fill in some details about whether eruptions were Mastiff function eruptions, for example the 9/12/88 eruption was a Mastiff function eruption. For a couple early eruptions (8/20/86 and 2/6/97) a comment "start time exact" is included. Inclusion of that comment for these two eruptions should not be interpreted to mean that times listed without that comment were not exact start times. Although some of the times are from electronic monitors that may have had a sampling period as wide as 15 minutes, many of the start times with nothing in the comment column are exact start times.
Activity from Dome: As noted in the "Late Winter 2006 Geyser Activity" article, Dome was active on February 4 and 5. It was also reported active on December 26, 2005. Probably because that activity was reported in the OFVC logbook but not on the geyser listserv, people may have been led to assume that the February 4 and 5 activity was the first activity since the activity of Butterfly Spring started in May 2003.
As noted in the article, Dome had been slowing down prior to Butterfly's reactivation. But let me add some details about Dome's activity prior to Butterfly's reactivation on May 1, 2003. During the first six or seven months of 2001 Dome was reported at intervals ranging from 8 days to about 3 weeks. Dome was reported active 7/14-15, then not reported agatin until 8/26-8/30, then 9/26-9/27, then 10/22-10/23. No additional activity was reported in 2001. In 2002 activity was reported 1/12-1/14, 2/11, 2/16, 4/14, 5/20-5/22, 8/16-8/18, and 9/27-9/28. The only other activity of Dome reported prior to Butterfly's reactivation on 5/1/03 was a report of activity from Dome on 4/2/03.
Thanks to Bill Warnock for sending the photo of himself and his brothers Dave and John, as well as Herb Warren, John Railey, and John Muller. Is there someone out there who wants to do an article on Herb Warren?
Lynn Stephens
