Fabulous day in the basin with sunny skies and warm temperatures: Dome was active today and called several times on the radio by other gazers. Beehive erupted at 1616, with the Indicator starting at 1601. It appears "Tilt" Geyser (actually Tilt's Baby) is active. Sawmill was in control again today. Grand erupted at 0806 (N/T2C) and 1510 (?/?1Q). Oblong erupted at 0720, 1154, and 1556ns. Giant-Really odd stuff happening here today. From the conclusion of Grotto's marathon at 0645 until 1700 (a period of 10h 15m) there were no hot periods. All day long, the water levels in Mastiff, Giant, and the "GIP" slowly but steadily rose until the point were "GIP" was less than a foot from overflow and you could easily see the pool level in Mastiff while sitting on the benches at Giant. Bijou never restarted during this time, but in the last couple of hours it began having weak spits from its cone with fairly heavy splashing in Catfish. Finally at 1701, we had one of the strangest hot periods I have ever seen. "Feather" and "Feather's Satellite" started and erupted for almost 14 minutes. No other vents in front of Giant erupted. With the start of these vents, Bijou turned on and began erupting to about 10 feet. The water level in Mastiff slowly and steadily dropped from its prior level to a point about 2 feet below overflow. About 10 minutes into the eruptions of "Feather" and "FES", the water in Mastiff suddenly filled and began to overflow heavily. With this, "Rust" and the "Southwest Vents" began to fill with water. Over a period of about 2 minutes, Mastiff began to overflow heavily, then surge several feet, and very quickly began to erupt. The front vent reached a height of about 25 feet with jets landing beyond Catfish's cone and the back vent had periods of vertical play as high as 20 feet. About 90 seconds later, Mastiff and the vents in front of Giant quit. Bijou resumed play briefly then paused again as the water in Mastiff and the vents in front of the cone once again came up. Mastiff started overflowing again with surging to a few feet and "Feather" started erupting to a few feet as well. Just as it seemed Mastiff would once again begin erupting, the water levels in all the vents around Giant dropped, Bijou resumed, and the hot period was over. Bijou went into a mixed steam phase for a few minutes but gradually turned back into full water phase. Per Paul Strasser, Grotto ended its marathon around 0645 this morning. It had not yet started when I left the area at 1730. Daisy was having long intervals again today. Eruptions were seen at 0848, 1204, and 1519. The small geyser I reported yesterday at Biscuit Basin was erupting again today as I was leaving the area. MK -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
