[Geysers] Research on Tidal effects

Dear Scott Kronholm:

There was a flurry of items on this topic posted on this list in
mid-September 1999, and Katherine Luketina and I subsequently wrote a
short item which was published in Sput Vol.13, No.6, Dec 1999 pages 5
-7. Some points made there just might be of use. However, I would be
very cautious about taking on this subject as a senior research topic
because of the large and unresolved uncertainties surrounding it. Of
course, if the study were centred on demonstrating how difficult
topics such as this can result in widely different opinions existing,
then these items could provide quite a number of references, but
incontrovertible evidence to provide a demonstrable link between
tidal influences and geyser behaviour will be very hard to prove
without a lot of statistical investigation.
