>From Richard (Dick) Powell (rlpowell at indiana.edu) An article in the June 2005 (vol. 50, no. 6, pages 18-23) issue of Geotimes (monthly magazine of American Geological Institute) by Jake Lowenstern of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory is titled "Truth, fiction and everything in between at Yellowstone". Lowenstern summarizes the facts regarding the super-volcanic origins of Y.N.P. and subsequent earthquake activity and recent events such as the Norris Basin hot ground, as well as the U.S.G.S. reports on the "bulges" in Yellowstone Lake. Basically Lowenstern notes the exaggerated scenarios of recent movies for television (B.B.C.'s "Supervolcano" and "The Truth About Yellowstone", and, a show {no title?} on Naked Science by the National Geographic Society). He also notes less than succinct articles in newspapers and hysterics on varioius websites "Just Google for the words 'Yellowstone' and 'Doomsday' and you'll find hundreds of entries from scores of websites . . .". he suggests. Lowenstern's article appears to me to be a well thought out, comprehensive, but short treatment of complex scientific geologic problems and sensationalized versus accurate reporting to the non-scientific public. The paper can be accessed at http://www.geotimes.org., a web site of the American Geologic Institute. Dick Powell -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
