Enclosed is a photo of Strokkur I found on the Internet. It shows Strokkur's characteristic blue bubble, just as it is destroyed by the gunshot spike from beneath. In the 60 seconds prior to an eruption, the pool rises and falls a several times without being destroyed by an initiated eruption, resulting in a perfectly clear blue dome of water. The following link is to the site where I found the picture, and includes someone's photos of their trip to Iceland. Starting on image #57 there are two sequences of Strokkur eruptions. The first includes the enclosed picture, and is of one of the smaller to moderate eruptions. The second series is of a very big one. #61 is just after the destruction of the bubble (blue is still barely visible) by a powerful spike, which becomes a "superburst" of spikes through spikes in the images that follow. Note that in the second eruption sequence, the "bubble" (not pictured) was probably much larger, as evidenced by the bigger out-rushing wave in the crater. The rope wasn't there in 1997, and you could stand in the crater. The rope still places you awfully close... Strokkur does something like this every 5 minutes! His other pictures are very nice, too, with some thermal features included, enjoy. http://rogitrix.com/Photography/icelandPreview/pages/040413-0499-Iceland.htm -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
