There is a photograph I remember seeing in a book by Clyde Max Bauer, I
believe *Yellowstone Geysers* is the title. I recall it showing an
immense explosion of black water. The eruption type looked to be a mix of
bursting and jetting.
The book was published back in the 1940's (?) and it isn't too difficult
to find copies for sale. There are a lot of nice photographs in the book,
but many of them are mislabeled and some of the text is completely
incorrect as regards height, duration, interval, location, etc.
