We had visited Norris Geyser basin earlier in the day, when Steamboat was sending out occasional jets of water up to 30' or so. At the time I remember commenting to my wife that according to the sign there, that was the only known indicator that the geyser was about to erupt. But given that it had been eight years since Steamboat's last eruption, I wasn't really expecting it to go off later in the day. We were camping at Norris and had one of the really nice spots next to the meadow where we could easily look across and see the steam coming up from the Norris area. About 7:30 p.m. I noticed a large column of steam and rightly guessed that Steamboat was erupting. We immediately jumped in our car and drove over there. It was probably about ten minutes from the time we first saw it until we were actually at the geyser, which was still throwing up a large jet of water very h</span><span class="text_exposed_show" style="display: inline; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); line-height: 17px;">igh into the air. A light variable wind at the time would move the resulting "rainstorm" from the geyser back and forth: first falling west of the geyser (downhill toward Cistern Pool), then east (toward the parking lot), and occasionally over us at the upper viewing platform. We had an umbrella, but everybody was getting drenched from the "geyser shower." You can see this in some of the pictures. Much gritty water was coming down, so much so that my daughter's long hair was full of what she called "geyser vomit" and had to be shampooed out. Our van was covered with it also, and several washes later, I'm still struggling to get all the minerals off it. If you check the properties on the attached pictures you should be able to find the exact time each picture was taken. Most of the pictures were taken from the viewing platforms, which unfortunately don't give the full perspective to gauge how high the geyser was. Gradually the water diminished and turned to steam only, but I would say it was still spouting water at least 20 minutes after we got there, or around 30 minutes total. The steam roaring out was so loud that we had to shout to hear each other even when just three or four feet away from each other. We were all amazed at the fury and power of the steam jetting out of the ground; it was coming out like a rocket engine, very hard, fast, and forceful."</span></font></div><div><font size="3" face="Calibri"><br></font></div><div><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); line-height: 17px;"><font size="3" face="Calibri">"Sorry if I posted too many pics and videos of Steamboat. We were just so excited to actually be there, for its first eruption in eight years...tallest geyser in the world! I couldn't stop taking pictures and videos! Unfortunately, none of them can adequately describe the actual experience. One thing that amazed us was how very, very LOUD it was!
