(And of course I did a bit of visiting along the way.) When I arrived at Fan & Mortar, River, Gold & Angle were already on. In retrospect, the vents had water that I would have been happy with if they had followed an event cycle. Definitely not high, but just nice steady water levels. (Of course, I have seen those same water levels on many regular - nothing happening - cycles.) The other clue that I missed was that it had taken quite a while for Gold to come on after River Vent started.
A visitor, who had just come from Grand, asked me a question about if it was worthwhile to see other geysers, or if they were really all pretty much the same. (One of those questions that gets you feeling emotional about the geysers!) If I had known what was going to happen, I would have just told him to wait a few minutes and then decide! But instead I was giving him information about the large predictables . . .
When suddenly John & Will jumped up from their seats and moved to the right to get a better look, I saw that the steam had increased and I moved over to see High and Gold starting to build. After stunned watching for a several seconds, I said, "We've got to make a call!" In my first call, I said that we had had no events, but that the vents had suddenly started to build. High went to about 3 feet and steady, with Gold about 2 feet, very thick, and also steady. A couple of minutes later I called that High was steady at 5 feet. Gold was still at 2, maybe 3 feet and strong. It was only about a minute later that East Vent exploded into the strongest start that I have seen. Main Vent was right behind it, and I saw Mortar already at good height by the time that I could grab my pack and head out of the spray for the bridge. That had all taken place in maybe 5 minutes. I guess that the geysers were just ready!

[Those of you who know me well will know that the author of the previous report used quite a bit of "poetic license" with my words! Hmmmmm... ]

With my poncho finally on, I had a wonderful time alternately playing in the soaking spray and admiring how beautiful Fan was in the sunlight. I think that it is safe to say that the gazers and visitors there thoroughly enjoyed the eruption! The first pause was at 1203. I did not get an accurate duration. When the eruption had slowed, I had Will think through what he had seen from the time that he had gotten down there after Grand until the eruption, since it was his first F & M. The one thing that he didn't mention here was that Angle was intermittent after River turned off shortly after his arrival.
I'll send information about event cycles Saturday and Sunday morning in a later e-mail.

Go Fan & Mortar!
Polly Panos

-----Original Message-----

about the same time but I am pretty sure I saw a splash or two in Angle before
Gold by a few seconds. At this point there were still no splashes in Main (not
even a lot of steam, only very small wisps) and Bottom was only spritzing to
about 3 / 4 the way up the rock it hits. Polly would have a better description
