<DIV>At approximately 0545, while driving in at about the nine mile mark on the Madison (right where there is the big drive-through pull out with the "Talus" sign), I saw 4 cow elk running full tilt. Sure enough, about 100 feet behind them was a large grizzly. Three elk dashed into the river, but the other ran across the highway still followed by the bear. They disappeared into the small trees north of the road, then a few seconds later re-emerged a bit farther up the road. The elk jumped and flew into the river. The bear slammed on his brakes and said "Oh, [shucks]" (paraphrased). All elk made it across the river and disappeared into the forest, and the bear meandered back downstream... Fun event that lasted perhaps 1 1/2 minutes start-to-finish.</DIV>
