Greetings and Salutations, This is a report of odds and ends from my visit to Yellowstone July 1 to 7.  Barbara has been sending daily reports (Thank you very much Barbara) so I will try not to duplicate her reports.  Fountain has been erupting with intervals between 5:30 and 7 hours with most in the 6-6.5 range.  I strongly encourage you to download Ralph's latest electronic monitoring data before any park visit to confirm the latest intervals.  Now that it is summer he is doing frequent updates.  Fountain is erupting from a low pool with water just visible (for me, 5 foot 8 inches) about 1 to 2 hours before the eruption.  Jet is more often than not active before Fountain, but there are still eruptions where Jet does not start until well into Fountain's eruption.  I tell you, it feels odd waiting for Fountain when I know the last eruption was six hours ago but nothing is erupting but Clepsydra and I can barely see water in Fountain.  However, twenty minutes later the Fountain rise starts and Fountain erupts like normal.  Morning's Thief will usually give you two to three active periods of 3-6 bursts during the Fountain eruption.  The first can start almost simultaneously with Fountain or  within two minutes of the start of  Fountain.  The second is about two-three minutes after the first and the third (if you get it) is about 3-6 minutes after the second.  Many are in the 30-40 foot range, very impressive.  On 7-7-08 Morning's Thief erupted at 1114, ten minutes before the start of Fountain at 1124.  During that Fountain eruption Morning's Thief erupted at 1124, 1127, and 1132 and all four eruptions were in the 30-40 foot range.  I did have one Fountain eruption 7-4-08 926 where Morning's Thief only gave me two active periods and never got more than 3 feet high.  Spasm is usually seen before Fountain but now and then Fountain erupts just about the time Spasm is trying to start.  Super Frying Pan is active.  I think the intervals on Super Frying Pan are shorter if Jet is not erupting but I need to collect more data before I can say that for sure.  Clepsydra will usually stop about 5 minutes after Fountain stops, restart in about 4-5 minutes, then stop again 3-5 minutes later, then restart about 3-5 minutes after that.  In one case I saw it stop three times after the Fountain eruption and in one case it only stopped once but in most cases it stopped twice before going back to its usually eruption. Bulger continues to do minor eruptions in series.  In May I saw a series of minor eruptions that ended with three consecutive Bulger Major eruptions but I did not see that during the July visit.   Crystal Spring was having eruptions now and then, or I should say the pool overflows heavily and the two small vents to the northeast have small six inch eruptions.  I haven't seen Slurp in the last several years.  The Sputniks are active.  While they are most often seen just before or just after Grand bit I wonder if that may be just because that is the time people are in the area to observe them.  I did catch Penta from the start on 7-5-08 at 2059 with a duration of one hour seven minutes.  It was on the third consecutive Tardy cycle so I thought it was worth waiting after dark.  It ended quite abruptly as the Sawmill system went into a drain.  Unfortunately Churn did not erupt.  In the Black Sand Basin I saw two eruptions from Ragged and Jagged springs (I hope I have the correct names) that were 12-18 feet high.  UNNG-BSB-2 is still active and now has a small steam vent with it, about a meter uphill from the main vent (opposite from Green Spring).  It just steams lightly when BSB-2 is erupting.  I did sit on Green Spring for a couple of hours the day after its eruption on 7-6-08 without an eruption for me.  Green Spring was constantly boiling with periods of heavier boiling and weak waves over the pool from the main vent.  The perpetual spouters between Green Spring and Ragged Spring are still active.  Sunlight Geyser appears to be just splashing weakly.  On 7-3-08 I watched three eruptions of Dark Pool in the River Group, at 0628, 0645, and 0701,  If you get a chance watch from the uphill area, it is interesting to see the steam bubbles flash into the bottom of the pool during the eruption.  The two big pools on the flat above Dark Pool are very low, 2-3 feet down below the rim.  Several small geysers are active on the flat.  When I looked at the mud pots most of them were thick and less active, but after that we had some afternoon thunder showers and Steve Gryc found them quite active a few days later.  I also caught Silver Globe Slit on 7-3-08 with eruptions at 1610, 1735, and 1857.  All durations were about five minutes.  For the first minute of the eruption the height was about eight feet, then it dropped to about one foot and looked like it was going to stop at about the 1-2 minute mark.  However it never did quite quit, and rose back to about 2 feet for the last three minutes of the eruption.  Silver Globe Cave is putting out quite a bit of water, pouring a steady stream into Silver Globe Pool without ever changing its level.  I didn't notice any changes in Silver Globe Cave when Avoca spring erupted but the output from Silver Globe Cave did drop off when Silver Globe Slit erupted.  Pink Cone appears to be having about 20 hour intervals but I was not lucky enough to catch a start.  Pebble Geyser was occasionally in overflow but there is no indication that Gemini or Crack Geysers have been active.  That's about it, Stephen Eide <hr>Msg sent via CableONE.net MyMail - http://www.cableone.net
