<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=us-ascii"> <TITLE>Message</TITLE> <META content="MSHTML 6.00.6000.16414" name=GENERATOR></HEAD> <BODY> <DIV><SPAN class=234220800-27022007><FONT face=Arial size=2>Hank Heasler and Cheryl Jaworowski of the Yellowstone Geology Program have produced a report analyzing the activity of Steamboat Geyser on 21 February.  The work was done in response to the reports of a large steam cloud observed at Steamboat and the subsequent draining of Cistern Spring.</FONT></SPAN></DIV> <DIV><SPAN class=234220800-27022007><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT></SPAN> </DIV> <DIV><SPAN class=234220800-27022007><FONT face=Arial size=2>The report includes photos of the area, graphs of stream flow at the Tantalus Creek gauging station and temperatures in the runoff near the bridge below Steamboat and a point downstream where the combined outflow from Steamboat and Echinus contribute to the readings and at the Tantalus Creek gauging station.</FONT></SPAN></DIV> <DIV><SPAN class=234220800-27022007><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT></SPAN> </DIV> <DIV><SPAN class=234220800-27022007><FONT face=Arial size=2>Based on undisturbed snow and ice and the lack of measurable flow or temperature anomalies, Hank and Cheryl conclude that Steamboat did not have a major eruption.  However, temperature readings taken at the boardwalk at the Steamboat runoff channel suggest that there were forceful minor eruptions on 11 February at 02:40 and 21 February at 02:00.  After both of these periods of forceful activity the water flow decreased greatly as shown by near freezing temperatures under the boardwalk.</FONT></SPAN></DIV> <DIV><SPAN class=234220800-27022007><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT></SPAN> </DIV> <DIV><SPAN class=234220800-27022007><FONT face=Arial size=2>If you are interested in the full report email me off the list at <A href="mailto:ralpht@iglou.com">ralpht@iglou.com</A> for a .pdf containing the full report.</FONT></SPAN></DIV> <DIV><SPAN class=234220800-27022007><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT></SPAN> </DIV> <DIV><SPAN class=234220800-27022007><FONT face=Arial size=2>Ralph Taylor</FONT></SPAN></DIV></BODY></HTML>
