It's not illegal to go back there but I would not approach it from Grizzly Overlook where people could see you (is this the "trail"). I would definitely not go back there now with the bison rut going in full effect. It seems the wind will be coming later. I had a 50 degree temp change, mid 30's to mid 80's, somewhat relieved by a lovely breeze. Fires 300mi N of Yellowstone have sent smoke out way the past week, giving us great sunrises. The smoke earlier in the week was blown away in 1/2 an hour when the wind changed, leaving us clear blue skies, at least for a while. The smoke so far has not been a breathing hazard. Temps are expected to fall about 15 degrees to normal for the season. The chip sealing from Madison to Old Faithful seems to be complete with the road painting done this week. Hopefully the speed limits will be restored soon. Today was spent at Artemisia, which erupted at 0924 with some very tall bursts. It was reported ie at 1125 yesterday. Atomizer had a 35 second minor at 0845, a couple of minutes of wide, 1-2 foot high splashing (not boiling) at 0900, then nothing more until a 1247 minor (30 seconds). The 3rd minor was at 1409 (45 seconds), followed by the major at 1415. About the time I had walked back to Biscuit Basin, Fan and Mortar had an event cycle--the only one I heard called today. There was no quick way to exit Biscuit in the jam of traffic looking for parking. Elk are reappearing in the meadows along the West Entrance. A deer was in the young trees near Atomizer briefly until the major began, when she scooted over the bank toward the river. A pair of herons flew past while I waited this AM. Otters have been reported in the river below Lion, but I haven't seen them. A group of bison in the meadow N of Fountain yesterday resulted in a long traffic backup that lasted all morning. That won't help the fire situation. It was a bit cooler, but not by the 15 degrees forecast. At Artemisia yesterday I noticed log barricades at the north end of the overlook and across the social trail up the rise to iron spring. Both had warning signs to stay on marked trail and thermal warnings. Traffic was light. We have the Maple fire just N of West Yellowstone and the Fawn fire a bit further north, along with many other fires in surrounding areas, all contributing to the hazy skies, and colorful sunrises and sunsets. Great Fountain was late in its eruption when I arrived during a rest period at 0700. I didn't see water above the crater rim until 0714, and then only a handful of 6-8 foot bursts. Pink cone looked very promising--road bubblers were going strong, and the thumbhole was surging, but Fan & Mortar were waiting, so I continued to the UGB. Kit Barger called water in Beehive's Indicator at 0756, followed by the Indicator at 0757. I headed for the overlook, gathering visitors as I went. Beehive erupted at 0815. There was no information about Grand since yesterday, so that was my next stop. The logger download was 0353E, but I chose to stay until the window opened. A call from Jim Scheirer at Fan and Mortar changed that plan. (Daisy 1007ie en route and Riverside at 1017ns from the bridge) Fan and Mortar erupted at 1050, with rainbows despite the hazy skies. Hurrying back to Grand, I was stopped by Oblong (1105), then enjoyed the Grand view on the approach from the North (1110ns, 1 burst, turban start, turban and vent continued). I am clueless how to code that one. Turban at 0841 (Steve Robinson), then 0915 (D-0), 0937, 0959--then off to F&M. >From there to Castle (1135 minor), with a distant view of Uncertain (1200 Kitt Barger). Having such a great geyser day encouraged me to try for Pink Cone, which, not surprisingly, had finished, but I was rewarded with Pink at 1227ie. Fountain had not been reported since 1725A yesterday, but my luck and Fountain's regular intervals held. (1254). The elk on the West Entrance road near the campground were not accompanied by a traffic jam, and my trip home was smooth. I encountered several gazers today who had arrived since my last visit to Old Faithful area, a couple of whom were leaving today. I might have missed seeing those folks, if only briefly, were it not for this day of golden timing! Barbara Lasseter -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This morning I had ashes on my car. It was enough to cause me to look twice at the rosy color on the skyline in order to assure myself it was the sunrise. The smoke lessened as I got further into the park. The highlight of the day was seeing both an Atomizer major (0946) and the start of Artemisia (1021 d=20m) in less than an hour of waiting. At Artemisia, more "lincoln log" barricades have been installed, extending across the entire wall and back 3-4 feet from the edge. Only 1 of the warning signs on the logs remains, however. From my observations, the new logs are being seen more as a rustic bench than as a barricade.
