The NASA site does say it is a mosaic, by which I assume it is a mosaic of two photos, one of White Dome-moonlit and one of the aurora, merged together in a photoshop program.

My friend Paul Strasser is completely correct here. This "photo" is totally
faked and doctored for the reasons he points out and probably more. It is
indeed jarring.

Fake.
If white dome was that well illuminated it would be by a moon, and no way
the aurora and stars would be so nice. And the sky would bed almost blue.
I know cuz I have taken photos from there of aurora and the geyser is
silhouetted.
And look at the treeline - it is painted.
It is so 'wrong' that it is jarring.
