June 6

Webcam assignments down basin in the early morning are very difficult. The 0800 Grand reported on 6/4 was actually an Oblong, the second time this season I have noticed such a discrepancy. Wind directions can be extremely fickle in the morning. This morning the steam cloud from Riverside (0540) was blown over to near the Giant platform before rising straight up. Steam clouds from Oblong and Grand are often well off from where they typically appear later in the day.

Churn continues to be active. I have now seen it erupt to at least 6 feet on 3 different days. On 6/2 it had a series of at least 6 eruptions. I witnessed the first 3 myself and heard others called.

Bulger is very active. Its eruptions often well exceed 6 feet and continue several minutes. Today it had longer eruptions than I have ever seen before. I will have to do some timing and duration measurements.

Penta continues its activity. It recently was shy and went overnight 3 straight days, then missed several days. Steve Eide called it at 0916 (d = 32 minutes) today.

With all the recent rain West Triplet has gone into early spring mode. The last two days it has been yellow-brown and in overflow without truly erupting. Steve Eide called an eruption yesterday, but he said it just splashed a few times before subsiding. Grand was 1524 yesterday (T1C), then E2312 and today was 0806 (T2*C).

Great Fountain today was 1323 with P = 11. After the 1 meter boil (actually at least 5 meters), the pool dropped nearly out of sight for several minutes. I had never seen that happen before and I do not know if it is unusual. It slowly rose and then had a standard eruption. I left in the rain after the first 10 minutes.

There was no F and M by the time I left the Upper Basin about 1230.
