[Geysers] Brief report, 7/1/2010

As of 2115, just shy of five days into the interval, Fan and Mortar have
still not erupted. They were under observation from roughly 0500 to 2115,
during which the only event cycle was an anemic, ten-minute pause at 2015.
It's worth noting that Frying Pan has been more active than I've seen it in
a long time. In the last couple of days, it has come on between 25 and 30
minutes after River Vent during most hot periods that lasted long enough.

Grotto started at 1012, and Spa was noted to be active this evening at
1935. It was still erupting around 2115, with some vertical spikes nearly
as high as the first tree toward Grotto from the pool. Grotto was still ie
at 2115.

It's probably already been reported, but just in case--Biscuit Basin is
closed for boardwalk and parking lot maintenance, likely for most or all of
the season.

Bears:

Around 1110, a Xanterra tour guide approached me and Scott Grisso and
asked us to report to the Visitor Center via FRS that she and her tour group
had just seen a grizzly from the boardwalk at Morning Glory Pool. She then
pointed downstream and tried to point it out to us crossing the river to our
side. We didn't see it, but visitors coming back from Morning Glory
confirmed that they'd watched it cross. We have no idea where it went from
there.

Also, a slight clarification of the report of a gazer's equipment being
mauled at Artemesia: The equipment in question was a brand new camp chair,
and the reason it had been left overnight near Artemesia the was the sudden
and unexpected appearance of the bear. The pieces that were chewed and spit
out by the bear reportedly smell "very bad." So apparently, if you're
thinking about manufacturing a cologne out of bear slaver, you might want to
look into a new business plan.
