Why does it show up on Seismographs on another continent?

Why not. This is one mostly-solid ball of rocky stuff, and energy (seismic
waves, for example) can be transmitted through that stuff.

  What do the colors mean?

Each line across the seismogram represents 15 minutes. Different colors
make "counting" the lines easier. Each cycle of 4 colors represents 1 hour.
