Holiday Greetings:

Bill and I were in the basin on the 26th,27th and part of the 28th. Kit joined us on the 27th. It was bitterly cold...I caught Beehive on the 27th (ie 8:40) and 28th (8:32), both were at temperatures in the minus 10 degrees F...just spectacular. Two of my four Grands were 2 bursters. As to the steam cloud in question, it was NOT Giant or F&M. Maybe a Grotto, Rocket major,or even a Daisy...with the sun down at 4:30 we had already gone in to warm up. The steam clouds are huge with these temperatures. Kit may have some times when she posts her report. I will try and get some pictures posted on facebook this weekend...we had a great time.

Here's a satellite image showing a yellow line leading from the Old Faithful web cam to the Midway Geyser basin (Grand Prismatic/Excelsior). The Midway geyser group would lie approximately behind Old Faithful's steam. So the large steam cloud which lies to the left of Old Faithful in the web cam image of Dec. 27th is still a mystery.

Yellow Line is line of sight from Old Faithful to Midway Geyser Basin's Excelsior Geyser

Yellow dot is the location of Grotto Geyser. The magenta dot is Solitary Geyser.

Anyone have a guess what the big steam cloud is. I don't know how long it had been there but it was gone (covered up by the fog) about 5 minutes later.
