This report will consist of little other than Giant-Grotto, which did wierd
stuff all day -- I've certainly not seen it before, nor had Darrell, Ann, or
Steve.

I will note Beehive at 0817 (Indicator 13 min).
Castle 0721 major
Grand 0243E and 1144 (T3Q -- note that I have yet to see a 1-burst eruption
this year).
The F&M marker is in place as of 1530.

0733 ie Grotto; off between 0850 and 0900.

0824 ie Giant Hot Period (GHP) in progress, d>4 min. Seen from Wave-Beauty,
Mastiff was to 2 feet, huge amount of steam from the platform. Bijou was
probably on throughout -- at least it was on well before Mastiff dropped
(apparently) at 0828. Minutes later, on site, I found that India had been about 3/4
covered. Giant was surging hugely, frequently vertically throwing water over
the back of the cone. One surge I'm sure reached 10 feet above the top of the
cone. Feather was splashing, Slit bubbling, SW ( ! ) oveflowing with no
jetting. This action gradually died down.

0944, water rising in Mastiff, Bijou fully on. Water rose in M to about 3
inches below overflow and sat there. SW Vents came on. Interesting -- Bijou shut
off at the "same" instant that Mastiff dropped; came back on after about 30
seconds. Bathtub.

1047, water rising in Mastiff, Bijou fully on.
1049 GHP Feather and SW only, overall weak, d = 2m 03s. Bijou stayed on
until about 1 minute after Feather came on.

1155, water rising in Mastiff, Bijou fully on.
1157 GHP Feather and SW only but with some pretty decent Mastiff boils so
overall better than 1049. D = 2m 19s. Bijou never completely shut off during
this hot period.

1303 Oblong

1306 Grotto Fountain, (d < 11 min), Grotto 1309

1322, water rising in Mastiff, Bijou powerful
1324:44 GHP, Mastiff boiling 2-3 feet in both vents but only light overflow.
Feather and SW, then Satellite. With Satellite was spurting in Rust and
bubbling in Cave.
1326:30 Cave is suddenly jetting 1 to 2 feet, then 3, then bursting 3 to 4
feet. Rust is jetting to 1 foot. Feather is cone high, Mastiff boiling, Bijou
(never off) roaring. Note: no water visible in Slit, Turtle, Postholes.
1328:28 VERY suddenly, F, FS, R, C all off as Mastiff dropped like a plug
was pulled. Bijou roaring.
Crap. Total duration 3m 44s.

1434, water rising in Mastiff, Bijou on
1437 GHP (disappointing), d = 2m 09s. Feather and SW only, Bijou never
turned off.

1537, water rising in Mastiff, Bijou weakening and then, would you believe,
off.
1539, GHP really weak, D = 1m 49s with Feather and SW only.

NOTE: Early (roughly 0830 to 1000) the North and East (NOT South Purple
Pools were overflowing heavily, steaming streams to the river with enough volume
that the turbulence and bubbling at the river was visible from the platform
with naked eye. This overflow gradually declined and appeared to have
completely quit by about 1300.

Mastiff was in constant depth charging between hot periods.

On reflection, I think Giant tried to erupt on the 0824ie hot period. There
clearly was a huge amount of energy there, as there were over-the-side jets
throughout the day, vertical surging during even the bathtub, and etc. However,
that last hot period was the first one that acted "normal." And so we left.
Sign logs rolled tomorrow? No surprise.
