I don't know about Rainbow Springs, but Allen & Day noted the presence  of 
"bitumen with a tarry appearance and odor" and "tarry substance" in the  
fumaroles at Calcite Springs. Their interpretation was that this was a  distillate 
from organic material in the sedimentary rocks that lie beneath the  volcanics 
of that area (near Tower).
