My computer died as I was typing this message this morning, so I am
trying again in case nobody else has posted it.
Grotto started a marathon ~1700 on 26 July (ended 27 July about 2016
thanks Greg Gushwa!). Some people went out at about the 6 hour mark to
watch for the recovery hot period. On 28 July at 0515 and 0600 there were
calls that the hot period had not yet happened (thanks to Kitt, Tara, Paul
and others!!), so most gazers were able to get to the Giant area in time to
see it. The hot period began at 0735 with Feather and followed by Feather
Satellite in about 25 seconds. Mastiff was overflowing at 0736, and at 0737
the SW Vents started followed by surging in Mastiff to about 2-3.' Mastiff
was flat at 4 minutes. Mastiff surged again up to 3-4' and a bit wider at
0740. At 0743 Mastiff was flat and we were worried, but it quickly surged
to 3-4' and became wide and about 6' with much encouragement from the
gazers. MASTIFF erupted at 0745. Bijou was in steam at 0746, and Giant
began surging at 0747 and started at 0747. Catfish was erupting at 0749. It
was steamy but we could see Mastiff and the top of Giant briefly. Paul
said the duration of Giant was 90 minutes, and Lynn said the Interval was a
short 4d 7h 41m!
