For those with access to journals by the Geological Society of America, the January 2007 issue of _Geology_, p. 85-88, has "Processes controlling water and hydrocarbon composition in seeps fromthe Salton Sea geothermal system, California, USA." The location involved is the Davis-Schrimpf [typically called by we gazers, "McDonald-Schrimpf"] mud pot field. Note that the article does NOT significantly discuss mud pot activity, but focusses primarily of the non-organic formation of hydrocarbon compounds. Note also that the mud cones are referred to as "gryphons," and the slight ground depressions among them are called "calderas."
