All, It is possible that some folk don't know how to reduce the size of a photo. I strongly recommend a free photo editor called Irfanview found at www.irfanview.com/. It has the ability to do many nice things to a photo, including reducing the file size. Besides that, the most important thing is that you can adjust the brightness/contrast etc so that a junky digital photo becomes clear and viewable. The max size you should send accross a phone line is 680x480, and really half that is usually more than adequate. Hope this is helpful Dave Crotty ----- Original Message ---- From: David Monteith <dmonteit at icehouse.net> To: geyser observation reports <geysers at wwc.edu> Sent: Friday, February 16, 2007 2:56:46 AM Subject: [Geysers] Oversized pictures -- A Warning Enough! There is no reason to post pictures that are over 1Mb in size. For viewing on most monitors, jpegs less than 200kb are more than adequate. In fact, for most of what we are sharing 100kb is more reasonable. Large file sizes are needed if you plan to print the picture or need to zoom into fine detail but they are not needed on the geyser list. For those of us that are still on dial-up, these large files are a disaster. I waited over 90 minutes for todays mail to download. I found the pictures interesting, but I would have appreciated them more if I hadn't had to wait. Please watch your file sizes. If this continues to be a problem, more Draconian measures may be taken.
