With permission from the NPS, I went out to the new geyser. It is about 160 feet downstream from the footbridge on the western bank. In the area around this feature there are several new patches of hot ground and hot water is seeping out in many areas. The erupting feature is about 12 feet from the river in an area where I have never known a vent to be. There is a heavy amount of black obsidian sand coming from this feature and the others in the area. I am beginning to think it is perpetual as I have yet to see it off or speak with someone else who has. The vent is about 4 feet long and has no evident sinter within it. There is a small gravel cone being built up around it. Another of these cones is found about 3 feet to the south, but that feature is no longer erupting. There is steady overflow into the river. Looking at the USGS thermal map of Biscuit Basin, there is _nothing_ shown anywhere near the Firehole River downstream from the footbridge at Biscuit Basin. Nothing. Mike Keller reported this new geyser as "on the western bank" of the river. I would request to know how many feet from the river and, if it has been checked, is there evidence of any blowout there? (Bear in mind the 20th Century history of how Black Opal and Wall formed.) Thanks. Scott Bryan -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
