Mount St. Helens Roars Back To Life
Ash Advisory Issued For Areas Near Volcano

MOUNT ST. HELENS, Wash. -- Mount St. Helens re-awoke shortly before
5:30 p.m. Tuesday, spewing an ash and steam plume straight up into the
air. The plume then began to move east as the wind picked up.
Volcanologist Martin Streck speculated that Tuesday's eruption was a
result of the collapsing of the lava dome, exposing hot molten rock to
the cooler air. A 2.0 earthquake was reported around the same time the
volcano erupted, but the significance of the timing is unknown.
The plume of ash reached heights of 39,000 feet high. An ash fall
advisory was issued for areas near the volcano, including Skamania
County and for lighter amounts in Cowlitz County. The plume was moving
away from the Vancouver and Portland areas.
The advisory was posted until 10 p.m.
Stephanie, a storeowner from Cougar, Wash., which is west of the
volcano, told KOIN News 6 that it was the biggest ash plume she's seen
yet. She said the event was larger than the October eruption.
Stephanie said the wind was carrying the ash and steam to the east and
no ash was falling in Cougar.
Dave Thompson of the Oregon Department of Transportation warned
travelers not to pull over on the side of highway to look at the
volcanic show.
"We don't want any tragedy," he said.
The Federal Aviation Administration issued a notice to pilots that the
volcano had erupted. A 1-mile exclusion area has been in effect since
the volcano first came back to life last fall.
According to Steve Johnson at the Portland International Airport, air
traffic at PDX does not appear to have been affected, but as always,
travelers are encouraged to check your flight before heading out.

up-to-date information.
At 6 p.m., KOIN reporter/pilot Warren Petrie said the emission had
lessoned but continued, possibly with more ash than the initial blast.
The ash was rising to about 13,000 feet before leveling off and heading
east toward Mount Adams. Petrie, flying over the scene, said visible
ash was settling down on the east side of the mountain.
>From NewsChopper 6, glowing lava could be seen inside a crack in the
north end of the new lava dome. Petrie called the scene "surreal."
This most recent eruption comes just months before the 25th anniversary
of the devastating eruption in 1980 that killed 57 people.
