Ralph's assessment (below) is correct---"right on the money." The entire
area in early days was occasionally known as the "Excelsior Geyser Basin,"
although it was also known as "Hell's Half Acre" or "Middle Geyser Basin."

It was common for any of these names to sometimes be mixed up with those of
individual springs.

I think this is Grand Prismatic Spring--note Indigo Spring to the side, and
that the photo was made from the bluff to the east looking toward the old
Fountain Freight Road. Grand Prismatic Spring is quite near the tree line
on the west. Excelsior would be just to the right of the picture.

The caption doesn't claim it is Excelsior Geyser, but says "Excelsior or
Midway Geyser _Basin_". I'd guess that since Excelsior was active when the
photo was made that the name might have been extended to the area.
