The geyser basin-lake trail was rerouted around the north end of the ridge
between the lake and the basin.  The old, more direct route was rendered
dangerous following a blowout in 1994.  However, after the blowout some
visitors still followed the old route, and other routes began forming as
people tried various ways to get around the obstruction.  This tore up
moss, trampled grass, etc,.  The new route was emplaced in 1999; it is
level, quite direct, and far safer.
