Pink is a fountain-type geyser. The name refers to the pink coloration of its sinter. This same coloration is also seen at Pink Cone Geyser and Narcissus Geyser. Prior to the 1983 Borah Peak earthquake Pink only erupted about twice a day. After the quake it increased its activity so intervals averaged about 5 1/2 hours. In the early 1990's it had intervals of 5 1/2 to 7 1/2 hours with durations of 14 minutes. Then for awhile it had intervals from 3 1/4 to 3 1/2 hours with durations of 7 minutes. In recent years intervals have varied from 2 to 12 hours and averaged about 6 1/2 hours, with duration of about 12 minutes. The eruption reaches 20 feet tall and ends with a steam-phase.

What to look for:
Pink Geyser erupts with little or no warning.

Some of the temperature data used to derive the eruption times and durations used in this section were collected by Ralph Taylor under a National Park Service research permit, and the remainder was collected by personnel working for the Geology Department of the Yellowstone Center for Resources (including Ralph Taylor). The loggers are a combination of loggers owned by the NPS and Ralph Taylor. Analysis of the raw temperature data to extract the eruption data was performed by Ralph Taylor. The eruption time files on this website may be used provided that Yellowstone National Park is credited for the temperature data and Ralph Taylor is credited for the eruption times.

Pink Geyser has been monitored using electronic data loggers since 2002. The record is not complete for these years but there is a substantially complete record from July 2006 to March 2009. There are large gaps during winter months when critters damaged the loggers or we were not able to access the loggers because of bear management closures. The gaps are from 2343 02 Jan 04 to 1043 21 Jan 04; 1322 22 Jan 04 to 1529 07 Jun 04; 1808 11 Jan 05 to 1322 25 Jan 05; 2132 11 Mar 05 to 1620 27 Jun 05; 0654 08 Jan 06 to 0720 25 Jun 06; 0730 16 Apr 09 to 1343 09 Jul 09; and 2006 25 Feb 10 to 1325 06 Jun 10.

After the difficulties in downloading over the winters we began using a single deployment with six minute sample times for the winters of 2006-7, 2007-8, 2008-9, 2009-10. During these times intervals can be determined to six-minute resolution but useful durations cannot be determined.

The activity of Pink Geyser for 2010 to date is shown in the graph at the right. The blue line shows all of the eruption intervals and the green line shows the 1-week moving median interval. The straight red line is a linear regression fit, included to show the general trend of intervals.

At some point between the end of the winter data in February (when the thermistor wire was chewed by an animal) and the resumption of data in June the mean interval dropped to half the value from February and Pink Geyser began having both long and short intervals (6-8 minutes and 1-3 minutes respectively).

The next graph shows the intervals for the months preceding the last download. In this chart the intervals are in dark blue and the moving median is shown in yellow.

Another useful representation of a geyser's activity is the distribution of intervals. The next chart shows the distribution of Pink Geyser intervals for the year to date (blue), the month preceding the last download (maroon) and the week preceding the last download (yellow). Note that in this and the other histograms displayed here the labels shown on the X-axis represent the upper boundary of the class, not the midpoint. Geyser times are traditionally truncated. The graph at the right has class widths of 30 minutes. The bar appearing above the label "5:00," for example, contains intervals from 4h46m through 5h00m.

The final graph shows the Pink Geyser interval statistics by month. This graph shows the maximum, mean, median, and minimum intervals for each month for which data is available. This chart summarizes the range and gives another perspective on the activity.

The moving median graph at the right shows a smoothed representation of the interval data with the extreme values eliminated. Note the remarkable regularity of intervals in 2002 and 2003.
